If a wild Pokémon is more than 5 levels above what your badges let you control, it gets harder to catch.

Your chances

Pick a Pokémon to see your chance of catching it with each throw.

Estimates for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. They don't include critical captures, so your real odds can be a little higher.

What Affects Your Chances

Every Pokémon has a hidden catch rate from 3 to 255. The higher it is, the easier the Pokémon is to catch. Most legendary Pokémon sit at the very bottom with 3. Your odds then go up or down depending on a few things:

  • HP: the lower its HP, the easier it is to catch. Knocking it down to almost nothing more than doubles your odds compared with full health.
  • Status: a sleeping or frozen Pokémon is 2.5× easier to catch. Paralysis, poison and burns give 1.5×.
  • Your ball: Great Balls give 1.5× and Ultra Balls 2×, and some special balls go much higher in the right situation.
  • Low levels: Pokémon below level 13 get an extra boost, which makes early catches easier.
  • Badges: if a wild Pokémon is much stronger than your badges allow, it's harder to catch.

Sleep is the best status to aim for. It gives the biggest boost, and a sleeping Pokémon usually can't attack you while you throw.

Picking the Right Ball

The calculator ranks the best balls for your situation, but here are the big ones to remember:

  • Quick Ball (5×) on the very first turn of a battle.
  • Timer Ball (up to 4×) for long battles. It gets stronger every turn and maxes out after 10 turns.
  • Dusk Ball (3×) at night or in caves.
  • Net Ball (3.5×) for Bug and Water Pokémon.
  • Nest Ball for low-level Pokémon. It's strongest on the lowest levels and stops helping once the Pokémon is above level 21.
  • Repeat Ball (3.5×) for species you've already caught.

Common Questions

Why is this only an estimate?

The games sometimes give you a "critical capture", where the ball only shakes once and is much more likely to work. How often that happens depends on how many Pokémon you've caught, so we leave it out. HP is also shown in the game as a bar rather than a number, so the slider is a best guess.

Does this work for other games?

It uses the Scarlet and Violet formula. Older games work in a similar way, but some ball bonuses and extras are different, so the numbers won't match exactly.

Where does the data come from?

The formula comes from Bulbapedia's catch rate research. Catch rates come from PokéAPI, checked against Bulbapedia, using the Scarlet and Violet values where they changed. Spotted a mistake? Let us know.
