What EVs Are

EVs (effort values) are hidden points a Pokémon earns as it trains. Every time it defeats or catches a Pokémon, it picks up 1, 2 or 3 EVs in a particular stat, depending on which Pokémon it beat.

They add up to a real difference. At level 100, every 4 EVs in a stat gives it 1 extra point, so a fully trained stat ends up 63 points higher than an untrained one.

The Rules

A single stat can have up to 252 EVs.
A Pokémon can have 510 EVs in total, across all its stats.
That's why you'll often see 252 / 252 / 4: two stats maxed out, and the last 4 in a third stat for 1 extra point.

Ways to Train

Vitamins (HP Up, Protein, Iron, Calcium, Zinc, Carbos) give 10 EVs each, all the way up to 252.
Feathers give 1 EV each, perfect for fine-tuning. You can find them sparkling on the surface of Casseroya Lake.
Battling gives EVs based on the Pokémon you defeat or catch. Holding the matching Power item adds 8 more per battle. They're sold at Delibird Presents in Mesagoza, Levincia and Cascarrafa.
Made a mistake? A Fresh-Start Mochi (from The Teal Mask) resets all of a Pokémon's EVs.

Common Questions

Does Pokérus double EVs in Scarlet and Violet?

No. Pokérus doesn't exist in Scarlet and Violet, so it won't double anything there. A Pokémon that had it in another game gets it back when you move it to a game that has Pokérus.

Why aim for multiples of 4?

Only every 4th EV turns into a stat point at level 100, so leftovers are wasted. That's also why each stat stops at 252, and why the spare 4 usually go into a third stat.

Where does this data come from?

EV yields come from PokéAPI, checked against Bulbapedia's Generation IX list, and the training rules come from Bulbapedia. The Pokémon listed are the ones in the Paldea, Kitakami and Blueberry Pokédexes. Spotted a mistake? Let us know.
