What IVs Are

IVs (individual values) are like a Pokémon's genes. Each of its six stats gets an IV from 0 to 31 when you first meet it, and they never change. That's why two Pokémon of the same species, at the same level and with the same nature, can still have slightly different stats.

At level 100, each IV point adds 1 to that stat, so a Pokémon with 31 in a stat has 31 more points there than one with 0.

Low-level Pokémon only give a rough range. The higher the level, the more exact the answer.

The Judge's Ratings

The games have a Judge feature that rates each IV with a word instead of a number. In Scarlet and Violet you unlock it by talking to the nurse at a Pokémon Center after the credits. Here's what each rating means:

Improving IVs

You can't change a Pokémon's IVs, but Hyper Training makes a stat act as if its IV were 31. In Scarlet and Violet your Pokémon needs to be at least level 50. A Bottle Cap trains one stat, and a Gold Bottle Cap trains all six.

Hyper Training doesn't change the real IVs underneath, but the stats act as if they were 31. So for any stat you've Hyper Trained, this calculator will show 31.

Common Questions

Why does it say "not possible"?

Something doesn't add up. Double-check the level, the nature and any EVs. Items and in-battle boosts can change the numbers too, so read the stats from the summary screen, not during a battle.

What if I don't know its EVs?

A freshly caught or hatched Pokémon has 0 EVs, so leave them at 0. If it's been battling for a while, the answer might be off. Our EV Training Planner explains how EVs work.
